We also bumped into an eager and hilarious gaggle of girls from Sookmyoung Women’s University, who were eager to show their school colors. From around last year, letter jackets for colleges, clearly denoting where you go (a very important marker on the social pecking order in Korea) and what major you are have become really popular.
Naturally, the “better” your school, the more likely students are to order these jackets (usually according to major or major club activity) and do the letter jacket thing. Very different from the all-American look it comes from, which are the varsity letters one gets for being on a particular sports team. Of course, here in Korea, it’s a style thing, but it has been adapted to also show a different kind of pecking order — not being on a varsity sports team, but being from a particular school.
That darn cat! (He’s the mascot for a nearby “cat cafe,” which is, as you might imagine, a cafe filled with…cats.
You go, girls!
