Korean social spaces, much like physical ones, are often quite austere. There is often a homogeneity of thinking and behavior that is quite frustrating.

한국의 공간들은 대부분 사교적으로 내핍 상태다.  동질적인 사고방식과 행동 때문에 가끔 아타깝네요.

Korean life is filled with strict social rules, along with the idea that there is one way to do things, that the group is more important than the individual.

한국의 일상생활에 사회적 규칙들이 너무 많고 하는 법도 하나밖에 없고 집단주의의 의식도 아주 쎈 편이다.

People often look at the new with suspicion, with difference as not being good.

많은 사람들이 새로운 걸 보면 안좋게 생각하고 다름의 개해서도 부정적으로 생각하다.

But things do change.

그런데 다 조금씩 변하지오.

Itaewon has always been a welcoming home to those who live on the edges of Korean society, from foreigners to prostitutes, gays and other social outsiders, for anyone who wanted to be outside of the oppressive gaze of Korean society. In that way, Itaewon has actually been a social safe haven for all who wanted escape the prying and judgmental eyes of their peers. It’s like a cultural “Casablanca.”

이태원은 한국 사회의 끄트머리에 자리잡은 이들을 반겨주는 집과 같은 곳이다. 외국인에서부터 동성애자, 성매매여성에서 이방인들까지 한국사회의 억압적인 시선에서 벗어나고 싶은 이라면 누구나 반기는 곳이 바로 이태원이다. 도덕적인 잣대를 들이대어 판단하는 주변인들의 시선에서 벗어나고 싶은 사람들에게 이태원은 사회적 안전지대다. 문화적 ‘카사블랑카’라고나 할까.

There has always been a beautiful freedom about Itaewon, from the times when the rest of the city closed after midnight and went underground, but night clubs, restaurants, and noraebangs  in Itaewon remained open without apology, to even now, when people are free to dance, meet people of different cultures, and have their own personal adventures outside of the stricter, ritualized playstyles of the general Korean culture.

대다수의 도시가 잠드는 자정이 되면 아름다운 자유가 있는 이태원에서는 나이트클럽, 식당, 노래방이 지하에서부터 깨어나기 시작한다. 일반적인 한국의 정형화된 놀이문화에서 벗어나 엄숙함을 모두 떨쳐버린 채, 춤을 추고 싶으면 추고, 다른 문화와 교류하기 위해 사람들을 만나며, 점잖은 척하지 않고 그들만의 모험을 즐긴다.

Those who know, know that Itaewon is one of the most unique and wonderful cultural mixing zones in Korea, on a level rarely found in other countries. It’s not just American, or Korean, or Russian, or Japanese, or Nigerian, or Canadian, or Indian, or anything else. It is a free mix, unique in the world. Those who know, like JYP, and many others, all played here in the secret hours of the night, when we sang to our hearts’ content, and yes, also danced in the streets.

이태원은 문화적으로 매우 독특하고 훌륭하게 섞인 한국의 문화혼합지역으로 다른 나라에서는 이런 곳을 만나기가 쉽지 않다. 이곳은 단지 미국인, 한국인, 러시아인, 일본인, 나이지리아인, 캐나다인, 인도인, 또는 그들만의 것이 아니다. 자유로이 섞여 있는 독특한 세계다. 그룹 UV의 노래 ‘이태원 프리덤’처럼 우리는 이곳에서 노래를 부르고 또한 거리에서 춤을 추며 자유로운 밤을 만끽한다.

Itaewon is not dangerous, nor is it a threat. People here are largely friendly, smile at one another easily, and are open to difference. Those who fear this place are usually those who don’t know it, and are those who fear the Other, as well as freedom itself. For everyone else, in a society built on stress, competition, and social policing, Itaewon has always meant freedom, in more ways than anyone can express in words.

이태원은 위험하지 않고 위협적인 곳도 아니다. 이곳 사람들은 대부분 다정하고, 서로에게 미소를 지어 보이며, 서로의 차이에 대해 관대하다. 이곳을 두려워하는 사람은 대부분 여기를 잘 모르거나, 자유에 대한 두려움처럼 사람들에 대한 두려움을 갖고 있는 사람들이다. 이태원은 스트레스, 경쟁, 사회적 감시 속에 세워진 사회 속에서 언제나 말로 표현할 수 있는 것보다 더 큰 자유를 상징한다.
